01Native to the Amazon River basin in South America.
02Also known as Pirarucu.
03One of the world's largest freshwater fish — can grow to more than 10 feet long.
04Must come to the surface to breathe air about every 15–20 minutes.
05Predators include people, jaguars, and caimans when young or vulnerable.
06Arapaimas eat almost any fish they can catch.
07Their giant scales are so tough they protect them from many predators.
08Male arapaimas help protect their babies and may move them to safer places if danger comes.
09Scientists sometimes place small transmitters inside arapaimas to learn where they travel and how to protect them.
10Because arapaimas face threats from overfishing and habitat loss, we must help protect them.
